NCAA: VOLLEYBALL NATIONS LEAGUE (VNL)

The world's leading volleyball teams participated in the 2024 Women's Volleyball Nations League (VNL) held in Arlington, Texas, from May 28 to June 2. This event was the final major volleyball competition before the Paris Olympic Games and the only VNL matches in the United States this year.

The Volleyball Nations League is the foremost annual global volleyball tournament, featuring 16 national teams per gender competing over eight thrilling weeks across Asia, North America, and South America.

The Challenge

With some of the world’s top volleyball teams coming to Arlington, Texas, the NCAA wanted to capitalize on the opportunity to identify hardcore volleyball fans and capture their email addresses so that it could promote its annual women’s volleyball tournament to the right audience. Previously, the NCAA had employed a simple table and tent setup when activating at events but was seeking a partner to help them execute a more engaging strategy that would naturally draw fans into its activation space. Rally Department was asked to design, develop and staff a brand activation to help the NCAA identify new volleyball fans that it should engage with.

The Development

On behalf of the NCAA, Rally Department fabricated a 10 x 10 foot backdrop that featured a custom design containing the 2024 NCAA Volleyball Championship logo and a ruler so fans could test their vertical jump. Attached to the side of the backdrop, we added a volleyball spike station, giving fans the opportunity to show off their best spike. In addition to the backdrop and spike station, fans were able to take pictures with the NCAA National Championship Trophy. To collect information, fans were able to enter a contest to win a VIP trip to the 2024 NCAA volleyball national championship game in Louisville. We collected fan information both digitally and physically, giving fans the option to enter the contest on either iPads we provided or on paper forms we created. QR codes that linked to the contest were displayed around the arena on A-frames boards, posters and digital signage throughout the arena. Fans who entered the contest were given a NCAA branded headband or wristband.
